After rallying for two runs in the ninth inning to tie the score, the Orioles counted in the 10th on Merv Rettenmund's fourth hit of the game to beat the Red Sox, 5-4, in the opener of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader. The nightcap was stopped by rain after 11½ innings.

Rettenmund tripled with one out in the ninth and scored on a two-out single by Boog Powell. Jerry DaVanon ran for Powell and counted the tying tally on singles by Brooks Robinson and Davey Johnson. In the 10th, Mark Belanger was hit by a pitch and Pete Richert sacrificed. After a pass to Don Buford, the runners executed a double steal.
