A five-run rally in the eighth inning brought the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Tigers. Doug Griffin ignited the outburst with a homer. After Luis Aparicio singled and Reggie Smith walked, Fred Scherman replaced Les Cain and struck out Carl Yastrzemski. A pass to Rico Petrocelli loaded the bases.

George Scott doubled, driving in two runs. Billy Conigliaro tapped out, but Bob Montgomery doubled to drive in two more runs. Willie Horton accounted for all of the Tigers' tallies with a homer and two singles. [The Sporting News]
