Juan Pizarro, winning his second straight start since being elevated to the Cubs' rotation, allowed only one hit in a 3-0 victory over the Padres. Ollie Brown rapped a ground single between third and short in the fifth inning for the Padres' lone safety. Clay Kirby battled Pizarro in the scoreless duel until the Cubs broke through for their runs in the eighth inning.

J.C. Martin singled and took second on a sacrifice. Don Kessinger was safe on an error by Garry Jestadt. Glenn Beckert tapped in front of the plate and was called out for interference with catcher Bob Barton. Kessinger stole second and scored along with Martin when Billy Williams singled.
