After losing eight straight games over two seasons in Three Rivers Stadium, the Phillies beat the Pirates, 3-2, for their first victory in Pittsburgh's new park. The Phillies were trailing, 2-1, going into the eighth, but then shot ahead when Deron Johnson walked and Willie Montanez smashed a homer.

Billy Wilson, who was the winner in relief, played third base for one batter in the Pirates' half of the eighth. Manager Frank Lucchesi brought in lefthander Joe Hoerner to face Willie Stargell and moved Wilson to third. Hoerner struck out Stargell and Wilson came back to the mound to finish the game.
