Eight consecutive singles led to nine runs in the fifth inning as the Cardinals defeated the Giants, 12-8, to complete the sweep of the three-game series. Jose Cruz, Dal Maxvill and pinch-hitter Ted Sizemore started the merry-go round with singles to load the bases. Lou Brock singled, driving in two runs and chasing John Cumberland. Julian Javier greeted Don McMahon with a single for two more tallies. Matty Alou beat out a bunt then Joe Torre singled for the fifth run of the frame.

After Jerry Johnson relieved, Ted Simmons singled to load the bases. Ending the chain of singles, Bob Burda was hit by a pitch, forcing a run across the plate. Cruz struck out.
