A pinch-single by Rico Petrocelli with two out in the ninth inning scored John Kennedy and gave the Red Sox a 12-11 victory in a slugfest with the Tigers, who lost although hitting six homers. Bill Freehan smashed three, Willie Horton hit two and Aurelio Rodriguez rapped one. The Red Sox had only one homer, but it was a grand slam by Bob Montgomery, the first of the catcher's major league career. Montgomery also drove in two runs with a double. Montgomery's slam followed a single by George Scott and two walks in the fourth. Four singles and a triple by Scott added four more runs before the stanza ended.

The Tigers battled back and finally tied the score at 11-11 on Freehan's third homer of the game in the ninth. In the Red Sox' half, Billy Conigliaro singled, Kennedy doubled, but Conigliaro stumbled rounding third base and was thrown out trying to score. The Tigers passed Montgomery intentionally before Petrocelli batted for Sparky Lyle and delivered his winning hit. [The Sporting News]
