The Mets jumped on Clay Kirby for four runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat the Padres, 6-4. Wayne Garrett and Cleon Jones led off with singles. After Ed Kranepool forced Jones, Tommie Agee singled to drive in Garrett with the first earned run off Kirby in 25 innings. An infield hit by Ken Boswell counted Kranepool. Ken Singleton then doubled to drive in two runs.

Gary Gentry, who started for the Mets, didn't benefit from the big lead, going out in the fifth inning. Tug McGraw in relief received credit for the victory after the Mets scored the deciding run in the sixth on a forceout by Jerry Grote with the bases loaded. [The Sporting News]
