Dock Ellis, who had been ineffective since the All-Star Game, regained his winning form and yielded only five hits as the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 3-2. Eliis gave up a run in the second inning on a single by Ron Santo and double by J.C. Martin, but the Pirates tied the score against Fergie Jenkins in the fourth and went ahead in the fifth when Dave Cash tripled and Vic Davalillo hit a sacrifice fly. Jenkins was removed for a pinch-hitter in the eighth, ending his string of nine straight complete games.

The Cubs rallied in the ninth and tied the score when Glenn Beckert and Joe Pepitone singled and Jim Hickman hit a sacrifice fly. In the Pirates' half, Davalillo doubled off Phil Regan with two out. Roberto Clemente walked. After a passed ball advanced the runners, Willie Stargell was handed an intentional walk. Richie Hebner rose to the opportunity and singled to drive in the winning run.
