A wild throw by catcher Jerry Grote on an attempted double steal in the 12th inning enabled the Padres to defeat the Mets, 1-0. Dave Roberts hurled the route for the Padres, but Tom Seaver, who started for the Mets, went out for a pinch-hitter in the 11th. Danny Frisella was the loser in relief.

Larry Stahl doubled for the Padres in the 12th and Nate Colbert drew an intentional pass. With Leron Lee at bat, the Mets were expecting a bunt, but Stahl and Colbert broke with the first pitch. Wayne Garrett, charging in from third base, could not get back to the bag in time and Grote's throw sailed over his head as Stahl raced home to score. [The Sporting News]
