With a helping hand from Darold Knowles in the 10th inning, Vida Blue gained his 21st victory when the Athletics defeated the Red Sox, 5-3. Blue was tagged for two homers. Doug Griffin connected with a man on base in the eighth and Rico Petrocelli tied the score with a solo swat in the ninth.

Bert Campaneris singled for the A's in the 10th and went to second on a wild pitch. Joe Rudi walked. Reggie Jackson doubled, scoring Campaneris. After Rudi was out at the plate on a grounder by Mike Hegan, Jackson scored on a wild pitch. The Red Sox threatened in their half of the 10th when Griffin and Luis Aparicio led off with singles.
