Doyle Alexander, who yielded only four hits and retired 18 straight batters at one stretch of his performance, pitched the Dodgers to a 4-1 victory over the Phillies. Bill Russell hit his first homer of the season to start the Dodgers' scoring in the first inning.

The Phillies picked up their run on singles by Don Money and Ken Reynolds, around a walk, in the second. Steve Garvey singled and Bobby Valentine tripled to put the Dodgers ahead to stay in the fourth. Alexander, who rapped two singles, drove in an insurance run in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
