An error by Gene Alley opened the gates and the Cardinals rode through for three unearned runs to defeat the Pirates, 3-2. The Pirates counted in the first inning on a double by Dave Cash, safe bunt by Gene Clines and double by Roberto Clemente, but Steve Carlton held them in check for the rest of the game.

Alley failed to come up with a grounder by Dal Maxvill to open the sixth. Carlton helped himself with a single and Ted Sizemore doubled to drive in Maxvill. Carlton scored on an infield out by Matty Alou. Joe Torre then singled to drive in Sizemore with the deciding run. [The Sporting News]
