Ernie Banks, pinch-hitting, then smashed a liner that bounced off Dave Concepcion's glove for an error, allowing James and Popovich to score.

After retiring Don Kessinger to end the inning, Gullett was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the Reds' half of the eighth and Wayne Granger held the Cubs hitless in the ninth. Pete Rose collected four hits for the Reds and George Foster smashed a homer with two men on base. [The Sporting News]
