Continuing their pursuit of the East division leaders, the Cardinals defeated the Pirates, 2-0, behind the four-hit hurling of Jerry Reuss. The Cardinals scored an unearned run off Steve Blass on an error by Gene Alley in the second inning and added their other tally on singles by Ted Sizemore and Joe Torre around an infield out in the third.

Reuss ran into trouble when Manny Sanguillen and Bob Robertson singled with one out in the ninth, but the lefthander fanned Richie Hebner for the fourth straight time and also struck out Al Oliver to end the game. [The Sporting News]
