Hot-footing to first base, Billy Cowan prevented a double play on a grounder with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to enable the Angels to defeat the Senators, 4-3. Mickey Rivers hit his first major league homer for the Angels in the opening frame.

Sandy Alomar opened the 10th with a single and Rivers beat out a bunt. After a sacrifice by Ken Berry, John Stephenson was handed a walk to load the bases. Cowan grounded to Tim Cullen for a forceout of Stephenson at second but beat Lenny Randle's relay to first as Alomar scored. [The Sporting News]
