Vida Blue scored the tie-breaking run on a wild pitch and gained his 22nd victory as the Athletics defeated the Yankees, 6-4. The southpaw gave up 10 hits, the most he had ever yielded in a game, and had to struggle for his triumph. The Yankees loaded the bases on two hits and a walk in the seventh inning and took a 4-2 lead on successive pinch-doubles by John Ellis and Ron Hansen. The A's came back to win with four runs in the eighth. Dave Duncan and Dick Green singled and Blue beat out a bunt for the second time in the game to load the bases. Bert Campaneris singled, driving in two runs to tie the score. Lindy McDaniel, replacing Jack Aker, walked Joe Rudi to load the bases and struck out Reggie Jackson, but then uncorked a wild pitch to allow Blue to score. Angel Mangual added an extra run with a squeeze bunt. [The Sporting News] |
