Fresh from perfect fielding in their four-game sweep over the Pirates, the Cardinals helped beat themselves with two errors, resutling in four unearned runs, and lost to the Reds, 6-5. The Cardinals were leading, 3-1, when errors by Lou Brock and Joe Torre helped the Reds go ahead, 5-3, in the eighth.

The Cardinals got a reprieve in the ninth when Ted Simmons singled and Joe Hague homered to tie the score, but the Reds posted the winning run in their half on a walk to Tony Perez and singles by Johnny Bench and George Foster. [The Sporting News]
