After winning the first game, 2-0, behind Fritz Peterson, the Yankees exploded for five runs in the seventh inning of the second game and completed the sweep of a doubleheader with an 8-5 victory over the Royals. Peterson, who yielded five singles, turned in his second straight shutout and seventh consecutive complete game. The Yankees scored on singles by Roy White and Danny Cater, around a grounder, in the second inning and added the other run on a double by Horace Clarke and single by Thurman Munson in the third. The Yankees were held to only two hits by Lance Clemons in the nightcap and were trailing, 4-1, before they erupted in the seventh inning. A single by Ron Swoboda and pinch-homer by Felipe Alou ignited the rally. After Gene Michael singled, Ted Abernathy relieved and passed Munson. The Royals then brought in Tom Burgmeier to face Bobby Murcer, who wrecked the move by smashing a three-run homer. [The Sporting News] |
