Gaylord Perry turned in his third straight complete-game victory, pitching a seven-hitter, as the Giants defeated the Phillies, 5-1. The Giants were held to six safeties, but scored three times in the first inning on only one hit -- a leadoff double by Ken Henderson.

Tito Fuentes was hit by a pitch and Willie Mays walked to load the bases. Runs then crossed the plate on a forceout of Mays by Bobby Bonds, a sacrifice fly by Dave Kingman and a passed ball and two wild pitches. [The Sporting News]
