Welcoming the change in pitchers, the Pirates fell on Wayne Granger for four runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Reds, 5-1. Jim McGlothlin, who started for the Reds, yielded only two hits, but one of them was a homer by Al Oliver in the seventh inning. McGlothlin was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

After Granger took over, Vic Davalillo singled, Oliver walked and Willie Stargell singled for one run and Richie Hebner followed with a homer for three more. Lee May accounted for the Reds' run with a homer in the last half of the ninth, spoiling the shutout bid by Bob Johnson. [The Sporting News]
