Woodie Fryman, who has been effective as a starter since returning from the Phillies' bullpen, scattered five hits and shut out the Dodgers, 3-0. The victory was his ninth, including six as a starter, since June 20. In that stretch, he had lost once. The Phillies sent him on his way to today's decision with two runs in the second inning on a single by Deron Johnson, a walk to Ron Stone, double by Don Money and sacrifice fly by Oscar Gamble. That was enough to pin Bill Singer with his 15th defeat of the season, although the Dodgers' starter allowed only three hits in a four-inning stint. The Phillies added their other run off Joe Moeller in the eighth when Willie Montanez and Johnson doubled. [The Sporting News] |
