In a duel between the league leaders in earned-run average, Tom Seaver triumphed over Dave Roberts when Cleon Jones homered with two out in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 2-1 victory over the Padres. Seaver extended his Mets' club record scoreless streak to 31 innings before Ed Spiezio homered for the Padres in the fifth. A triple by Jones and sacrifice fly by Tommie Agee produced the Mets' tying tally in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
