An inside-the-park homer by Reggie Jackson in the ninth inning carried the Athletics to a 2-1 victory in a sweep of a doubleheader after Dave Duncan drove in four runs with a single, double and homer to help beat the Red Sox, 9-3. In the opener, Duncan drove in the A's first two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. He also homered and added another RBI with a double when the A's erupted for seven runs in the seventh. Gary Peters, who is a good hitting pitcher, homered as a pinch-hitter for the Red Sox with a man on base in the eighth.

In the nightcap, Bert Campaneris homered for the Athletics in the first inning and the Red Sox tied the score in the fifth on a walk to Bob Montgomery, sacrifice by Sonny Siebert and double by Luis Aparicio. With two out in the ninth, Jackson blasted a drive over the head of Billy Conigliaro in center field. [The Sporting News]
