The relief pitching of Jerry Johnson, who did not allow a hit in the last 3 2/3 innings, enabled the Giants to defeat the Mets, 5-4. Bobby Bonds drove in two runs with a homer and double to pace the Giants to a 5-0 lead before the Mets rallied for all their runs in the sixth inning.

With one away, Art Shamsky doubled, Ken Boswell and Tommie Agee singled and Ed Kranepool tripled to produce three runs. Johnson, replacing Don Carrithers, bobbled a bunt by Jerry Grote, allowing Kranepool to score, but then handcuffed the Mets completely the rest of the way. [The Sporting News]
