The Royals defeated the Red Sox for the 11th straight time this season, winning, 7-5, behind the relief pitching of Lance Clemons, who gained credit for his first major league victory. The Red Sox appeared on the road to breaking the Royals' mastery when they scored four runs in the second inning, three counting on a homer by Gary Peters. However, the Royals struck back for five in the third.

Bobby Knoop singled, Buck Martinez doubled and Al Fitzmorris hit a sacrifice fly for the first marker. Singles by Freddie Patek and Paul Schaal produced another run. After Amos Otis walked to load the bases, Lou Piniella drove in two runs with a single and Bob Oliver capped the outburst with a sacrifice fly.
