With the backing of Bobby Murcer, who drove in three runs, Steve Kline pitched the Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Athletics. A single by Jerry Kenney, double by Jake Gibbs and single by Murcer gave the Yankees two runs in the first inning.

Murcer added a homer in the third and Felipe Alou accounted for the Yankees' last run with a round-tripper in the fourth. Reggie Jackson and Rick Monday homered for the A's tallies. [The Sporting News]
