A pickoff play at second base killed a Red Sox threat and enabled the Angels to gain a 1-0 victory behind the pitching of Andy Messersmith and Lloyd Allen. The Angels scored their run off Sonny Siebert in the first inning. Sandy Alomar singled, took third on a single by Mickey Rivers and crossed the plate as Tony Gonzalez bounced into a double play.

Messersmith extended his string of scoreless pitching to 17 2/3 innings before being lifted with two out in the eighth when Bob Montgomery singled and Siebert doubled. Allen, after throwing one pitch to Doug Griffin, whirled and picked Siebert off base. [The Sporting News]
