Pinch-hitter Jimmy Stewart tripled with the bases loaded as the Reds erupted for five runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 8-7. Jose Cruz and Joe Torre each hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who went into the final frame with a 7-3 lead.

Johnny Bench walked and George Foster singled to start the Reds' rally. Al Santorini replaced Reggie Cleveland and gave up a single by Tommy Helms to load the bases. Frank Linzy relieved and walked Woody Woodward on four pitches to force in Bench. Stewart then batted for Wayne Granger and hit his triple to tie the score.
