Dave McNally gained his 16th victory when the Orioles won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-4, but Mike Cuellar was turned back in a bid for his 17th victory by the Brewers, who took the nightcap, 3-0, behind the pitching of Lew Krausse and Ken Sanders. Elrod Hendricks, catching for McNally, backed his pitcher with a homer and double, driving in five runs. Don Buford also hit for the circuit and McNally helped clinch his 10th straight victory with a two-run homer in the eighth. Johnny Briggs and Andy Kosco homered for the Brewers, who rallied for two more runs in the ninth before Eddie Watt, in relief of McNally, ended the game.

In the nightcap, a combination of singles by Kosco and Ellie Rodriguez and infield outs by Dave May produced two of the Brewers' runs off Cuellar, while Briggs accounted for the other tally with a homer in the seventh inning. [The Sporting News]
