Rudy May allowed only four hits before needing the help of Lloyd Allen in the eighth inning as the Angels nipped the Red Sox, 2-1. Rico Petrocelli, who singled in the fifth inning, singled again in the eighth and scored the Red Sox run on singles by George Scott and Duane Josephson. Allen, relieving with two out, saved the game by retiring the last four batters.

The Angels were held to five hits, but singles by Sandy Alomar and Mickey Rivers and an infield out by Tony Gonzalez produced one run off Jim Lonborg in the first and the deciding tally counted in the third when Rivers beat out an infield hit, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Jim Spencer.
