A wild pitch by Jerry Koosman allowed Lou Brock to score in the seventh inning and gave the Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Both of the Mets' runs in the third were unearned as the result of an error by Ted Simmons, who dropped a throw to the plate in a collision with Jerry Grote. The Cards came right back with the tying pair on a single by Brock, safe bunt by Ted Sizemore, a double steal and single by Julian Javier.

Brock's steal was his 50th as the speedster set an N. L. record with his seventh consecutive season of 50 or more thefts. Brock also stole his 51st base in the fifth but was stranded. However, in the seventh, Brock singled and raced to second when Cleon Jones' throw from the outfield bounced into short right field. After taking third on an infield hit by Sizemore, Brock scored when Koosman uncorked his wild pitch. Steve Carlton gained his 18th victory for a personal career high. [The Sporting News]
