The Pirates, after falling behind on a damaging error by Gene Clines, rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Phillies, 6-4. Nelson Briles, starting for the first time since July 19, contributed a run-scoring double as the Pirates took a 3-0 lead, but the Phillies went ahead with four runs in the sixth. Tim McCarver singled and stopped at third with one out on a double by Willie Montanez. Clines then dropped a sacrifice fly by John Vukovich, McCarver and Montanez scoring. The Phillies went on to load the bases and added two runs on a single by Ron Stone.

In the Pirates' half, passes to Luke Walker and Willie Stargell, around a single by Rennie Stennett, filled the sacks. Roberto Clemente came through in the clutch with a two-run single and Manny Sanguillen iced the decision with a two-out single to drive in the final marker. [The Sporting News]
