Luis Tiant gained his first victory of the season after seven defeats when Carl Yastrzernski singled a run across for the Red Sox in the ninth inning to beat the Orioles, 4-3. The Red Sox started with three runs in the first inning, one scored by Reggie Smith on the front end of a double steal with Rico Petrocelli.

The Orioles got a homer by Andy Etchebarren in the fourth and tied the game with a two-run double by Boog Powell in the fifth. Tiant, who took over in relief of Gary Peters in the seventh, came out a winner when Mike Fiore walked, Doug Griffin singled and Yastrzemski rapped his two-out hit. [The Sporting News]
