Led by Don Kessinger, who collected five hits including the game-winning single in the 10th inning, the Cubs won first game of a doubleheader, 7-6, but the second game was halted by darkness after six innings with the Expos leading, 8-1. In the 10th inning of the lidlifter, Brock Davis walked and both runners were safe on a late throw to second on a bunt by Chris Cannizzaro. Cleo James then was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Kessinger came to the plate and hit his game-ending single.

In the nightcap, the Expos set a club record for most runs in one inning, scoring eight times in the sixth. John Boccabella and Bobby Wine led off with singles and when John Strohmayer bunted, the bases were loaded on Ken Holtzman's late throw to the third. Ron Hunt doubled and Ron Woods tripled, each driving in two runs. A pass to Rusty Staub ended Holtzman's pitching. After Joe Decker relieved, a double by Bob Bailey added one run and Boots Day accounted for two more with a single. Day took second on a sacrifice and counted the final run on a single by Boccabella.
