Tom Seaver triumphed over Bob Gibson for the third straight time this season when the Mets' ace pitched a four-hitter and beat the Cardinals, 7-1. The Mets collected 11 hits off Gibson, who was lifted in the seventh inning when the Mets scored three runs with the aid of four walks.

Stan Williams, obtained from the Twins, made his first appearance in a Cardinal uniform and yielded a run in the eighth when Bud Harrelson singled, stole second, took third on a long fly by Wayne Garrett and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. [The Sporting News]
