Ernie McAnally, who helped himself with a three-run homer, received credit for his fifth straight victory, tying the Montreal club record, when the Expos defeated the Cubs, 9-5. The Expos sent 10 men to bat and scored six runs on only two hits in the sixth inning.

Ron Woods walked, Rusty Staub was hit by a pitch and, after a sacrifice by Bob Bailey, Gary Sutherland was handed an intentional pass to load the bases. John Bateman popped up, but John Boccabella doubled to drive in three runs. The Cubs then walked Bobby Wine purposely to get at McAnally, who upset the strategy with his first major league homer. McAnally was forced out in the home half of the sixth, when the Cubs rallied for three runs, but Mike Marshall pitched the rest of the way to record his 19th save. [The Sporting News]
