Horace Clarke walked, Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer singled and Roy White walked before Shellenback departed. A pair of passed balls and a wild pitch by Casey Cox followed as the Yankees took a 4-0 lead.

The Yankees turned the game into a rout with seven runs in the second. Singles by Clarke, Munson, Murcer and White produced two runs before Felipe Alou homered with two men on base.
