. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Matty Alou, Joe Torre and Ted Simmons drove in two runs apiece to account for the Cardinals' scoring in a 6-1 victory over the Cubs. Simmons drove in a run with a single in the first inning and hit a homer in the eighth. Alou and Torre rapped back-to-back homers in the third.

Alou got his second RBI with a single in the fourth and Torre doubled for a run in the sixth. Joe Pepitone homered off Reggie Cleveland for the Cubs' run in the sixth. The Cubs, in addition to losing the game, also lost the services of Glenn Beckert for the rest of the season when the star second baseman ruptured a tendon in his right thumb in a dive for Simmons' ground single in the first.
