Three homers helped carry the Cubs to a 7-5 victory over the Cardinals, who fell six games behind the Pirates in the East division. Jim Hickman and Chris Cannizzaro hit homers for the Cubs in the second inning. After the Cardinals tied the score, the Cubs regained the lead with a run in the fourth on an infield out by Don Kessinger with the bases loaded.

The Cubs then exploded for four runs in the sixth. Cleo James was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Billy Williams. The Cardinals passed Hickman intentionally, but Ron Santo upset the apple cart with a three-run homer to decide the outcome of the game. [The Sporting News]
