The Dodgers pulled within 4½ games of the idle Giants in the West division race by defeating the Padres, 3-2. Al Downing, who was the winner with help from Hoyt Wilhelm, yielded a run to the Padres on singles by Nate Colbert, Ollie Brown and Ivan Murrell in the fifth inning before the Dodgers came back with a scoring burst in the sixth.

Maury Wills and Bobby Valentine walked and Dick Allen doubled to tie the score. After an intentional pass to Manny Mota, Wes Parker hit a sacrifice fly. Steve Garvey folowed with a double to send Allen across with what proved to be the winning run. Wilhelm rescued Downing from a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth. In the ninth, Don Mason doubled and scored for the Padres on an infield out and sacrifice fly by Colbert. [The Sporting News]
