The Dodgers erupted for four runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Padres, 6-2, to move within 3½, games of the slumping Giants in the West division race. Wes Parker opened the ninth with a single and took second on a grounder by Steve Garvey. After an intentional pass to Joe Ferguson, Jim Lefebvre singled to load the bases. Maury Wills singled, scoring Parker with the tie-breaking run. Bobby Valentine followed with a sacrifice fly.
