The Cardinals scored two runs in 12th inning and defeated the Cubs, 8-7, to pull within 5½ games of the Pirates in the East division race. Matty Alou singled with two out in the 12th, stole second and scored the tie-breaking run on a double by Ted Simmons. Joe Torre singled to drive in Simmons with what proved to be the winning run because the Cubs rallied for one run in their half on a single by Don Kessinger and double by Billy Williams before Stan Williams got Johnny Callison on a fly to end the game.
