The Cardinals scored two runs in 12th inning and defeated the Cubs, 8-7, to pull within 5½ games of the Pirates in the East division race. Matty Alou singled with two out in the 12th, stole second and scored the tie-breaking run on a double by Ted Simmons. Joe Torre singled to drive in Simmons with what proved to be the winning run because the Cubs rallied for one run in their half on a single by Don Kessinger and double by Billy Williams before Stan Williams got Johnny Callison on a fly to end the game.

Frank Fernandez and Ron Santo homered for the Cubs. Fernandez' drive was his first in the N. L. Jenkins, the Cubs' starter, became his club's all-time strikeout king, passing Charlie Root by fanning five to raise his career total to 1,433. [The Sporting News]
