Ross Grimsley pitched a three-hitter and George Foster came back to haunt his former teammates with a grand-slam homer as the Reds defeated the Giants, 8-1. Despite the loss, the Giants retained their one-game lead in the West division when the Dodgers also were beaten by the Padres.

The Reds were leading only 2-1 before exploding for five runs in the eighth. Pete Rose reached base on a throwing error by Chris Speier, stole second and scored on a single by Lee May. Don McMahon relieved John Cumberland, Johnny Bench walked and Hal McRae was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Foster's grand slam. Rose accounted for the final run with a homer in the ninth.
