Steve Renko gave up back-to-back homers by Willie Montanez and Deron Johnson in the third inning but otherwise was invincible in pitching the Expos to a 6-2 victory over the Phillies. The homers put the Phillies ahead, 2-1, but the Expos tied the score in the sixth with doubles by Boots Day and Rusty Staub before taking command of the game with two runs in the seventh on a two-base error by Johnson, a late throw to third on a grounder by Gary Sutherland, a sacrifice fly by John Bateman and single by Ron Hunt.
