. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Two relief pitchers, Tom Timmerman and Fred Scherman, made their first starts of the season and were winners when the Tigers defeated the Orioles in a twi-night doubleheader, 9-4 and 5-3. Dave McNally, who started the first game for the Orioles, was kayoed in the fourth inning, ending the lefthander's string of 13 straight victories. Mickey Stanley drove in five runs with a homer and single and Jim Northrup also hit for the circuit in support of Timmerman, who needed help from bullpen pal Ron Perranoski in the eighth.

Scherman hurled the route in the nightcap. Northrup smashed a three-run homer in the fourth inning, but round-trippers by Frank Robinson and Davey Johnson helped the Orioles tie the score before Dick McAuliffe won the game for the Tigers with a homer in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
