Fritz Peterson pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Stan Bahnsen followed with a four-hitter in the nightcap as the Yankees swept a twi-night doubleheader with the Indians, 1-0 and 7-1. A homer by Graig Nettles saved the Indians from a complete washout. Peterson won his duel with Sam McDowell when the Yankees scored in the third inning on singles by Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer, a pass to Roy White and single by Felipe Alou. In the second game, Bahnsen accounted for two Yankee runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh. Nettles set a major league record for the most double plays by a third baseman with his 50th and 51st of the season, one more than the previous mark by Harlond Clift of the St. Louis Browns in 1937.
