Coming through in the clutch, Dick Dietz hit a pinch-homer with two men on base in the sixth inning to enable the Giants to defeat the Padres, 7-5, and increase their West division lead to two games over the Dodgers, who were beaten by the Braves. Three unearned runs gave the Padres a 5-3 lead before the Giants began their rally in the sixth with a pass to Dave Kingman and single by Al Gallagher.

Chris Speier, attempting to sacrifice, forceed Kingman at third, but Dietz batted for Russ Gibson and came through with his homer. The Giants went on to add an insurance run on walks to Ken Henderson and Willie Mays, a double steal and an infield out by Tito Fuentes, scoring Henderson. [The Sporting News]
