Clay Kirby allowed only one hit -- a homer by Willie McCovey in the eighth inning -- as the righthander pitched the Padres to a 2-1 victory over the Giants, who were able to retain their two-game lead in the West division when the Dodgers also lost to the Braves. Bob Barton tripled for the Padres in the third inning and scored their first run on a squeeze bunt by Enzo Hernandez.

An unearned run then gave the Padres their victory over Gaylord Perry. Hernandez singled in the eighth, stole second and scored when Al Gallagher threw wildly on a grounder by Johnny Jeter. [The Sporting News]
