Monty Montgomery, rookie from Elmira (Eastern), gained his second major league victory as the Royals won the nightcap of a doubleheader, 5-2, after losing the opener to the Twins, 6-3. The Twins sent Blyleven on his way to triumph in the first game when they scored four runs in the first inning on a triple by Leo Cardenas with the bases loaded and single by Rick Renick, who started his first game since undergoing knee surgery in mid-May. Cesar Tovar singled with the sacks filled in the third to add the Twins' other two tallies. In the nightcap, Montgomery pitched scoreless ball until the ninth inning when Ted Abernathy had to take over to put down a two-run rally by the Twins. Paul Schaal homered for the Royals and Gail Hopkins batted in two runs with a double. [The Sporting News] |
