Helped by an error, the Mets scored four runs, three of them unearned, in the first inning to defeat the Pirates, 5-2. Ted Martinez led off with a single and, with one out, Jackie Hernandez booted a grounder by John Milner.

Ed Kranepool singled and Mike Jorgensen doubled, each driving in a run. After an intentional pass to Ken Singleton, Duffy Dyer struck out, but Tim Foli singled to add two more runs. [The Sporting News]
